Equality in sexuality: who bosses whom? Duties and rights in privacy

On August 26, Women's Equality Day is celebrated in the United States, an obligatory stop to activate ourselves in defense of our feminine rights and duties. And in TuSaludIntima we stop to analyze what this implies for your sexual well-being
Women's Equality Day is celebrated in the United States to commemorate that American women gained the constitutional right to vote. The 19th Amendment to the US Constitution was passed in 1920 and made it illegal to deny citizens the right to vote based on gender.
Today, this day serves to celebrate the achievements of the women's rights movement and as a reminder of the ongoing exclusive struggles of women. What better time to analyze the progress made in the last century and motivate ourselves to continue defending women's rights that are violated every day in our society.
And it is that we have so many rights to defend in the middle of the year 2021 that we cannot sit idly by. Let's start by defending the right of women and girls to make their own decisions about everything that affects their bodies, whoever they are and wherever they live.
As the human rights organization Amnesty International explains, all people have the right to exercise free control over our sexuality and reproduction without suffering discrimination, coercion or violence. This includes:
- Access to sexual and reproductive health information and services, including contraception;
- Choose if, when and with whom I want to marry;
- Decide if I want to have children and how many, which includes being able to terminate an unwanted pregnancy;
- Live free of violence and practices that seek to dominate my body and my sexuality such as sexual violence, genital mutilation and forced marriages.
Around the world, millions of people are prevented from exercising their sexual and reproductive rights or are persecuted if they dare to do so. In fact, 1 in 3 women in the world have suffered violence, sexual abuse or both, according to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). These figures tell us about the magnitude of the problem.
Your rights
If you want to know what you can do from your individual role to defend your rights as a woman, the first thing is to inform yourself and be aware of what they are, respect the rights of others and make yourself respected.
Let's review the main rights regarding female sexuality that you should monitor and enforce:
- Right to decide about your body and your sexuality
- Right to exercise and enjoy your sexuality
- Right to express your affections publicly
- Right to decide with whom or with whom you relate
- Right to have your privacy and intimacy respected
- Right to live free from violence
- Right to decide about your reproductive life (whether or not to have children, how many and when)
- Right to Gender Equality
- Right to live free from discrimination
- Right to receive information about sexuality
- Right to comprehensive sexuality education
- Right to have access to sexual and reproductive health services
- Right to sexual identity
- Right to participate in the creation of public policies on sexuality
Your duties
The truth is that nowhere in the world should there be something similar to the "sexual duties of women" that are required to be strictly complied with. Everything they say about sexual duties is about other people's decisions that the woman should be in full freedom to fulfill them or not; but the truth is that we know that our humanity has not yet achieved it and in some countries of the world there are lists and coercive regulations in this regard.
Thinking of people who enjoy freedom, let us consider the following aspects as duties in matters of sexuality:
- It is your duty to respect your sexual decisions and preferences, as well as those of other people.
- It is your duty to know your body and how it works.
- It is your duty to take care of your feminine (or masculine) health.
- It is your duty to work on your mental well-being.
- It is your duty to feel comfortable with who you are and reaffirm your identity.
After all, your duty as a person will depend on what you want for yourself, as long as it does not violate the rights of others.
If your relationship as a couple is going through a difficult time and you know how to ease tensions and reconnect again, we recommend you request an online #SexCoaching session to receive professional advice and direct your relationship as a couple.
But if you consider that some of your rights are violated, you must act before the person who violates you, ask for professional help and if you go beyond the barrier of your basic rights, notify the authorities.
